Hiking paradise right on the doorstep

Hiking & Mountaineering in the Ötztal

The hiker’s paradise begins right outside our front door – with the breathtaking path along the Stuibenfall and the idyllic high plateau of Niederthai, this is the perfect place for long walks and easy hikes.

The wildly romantic “Horlachtal” leading from Niederthai to the north-east also climbs leisurely at first and then leads into high alpine regions – as an ideal start for trekking & high mountain tours.

For many people, the Ötztal valley is the epitome of Alpine natural beauty. With its three valley levels – surrounded by around 250 three-thousand-metre peaks and crowned by the largest glacier area in the Eastern Alps – it is incredibly multifaceted. 1,600 km of marked hiking & mountain trails, paths and treks open up almost limitless possibilities: from long-distance hiking trails (Ötztal Trek: 400 km, 6 routes, 22 stages) to fascinating themed hiking trails such as those around the theme of water (Ötztaler Wasserläufer) to hut and alpine pasture tours or even geocache rounds. 10 summer mountain railways also make it easy to reach fabulously beautiful panoramic routes.

From the beginning of the valley with the mildest climate in North Tyrol, where wine and sweet chestnuts thrive, all the way up to the eternal ice of the Rettenbach glacier, you can marvel at just about the entire range of alpine flora and fauna. Your paths will lead you through flowering mountain meadows and primeval stone pine forests, over panoramic mountain flanks and sunny high plateaus, along rushing torrents and crystal-clear mountain lakes as well as to several natural gems.

Cycling, mountain biking, e-biking

First-class terrain for cycling tours of all kinds

Whether racing bike or mountain bike, trekking or downhill, the Ötztal offers an impressively wide range for bikers and is now also widely known in cycling. The Tour de Suisse has already taken the international cycling elite several times to the Ötztal for the royal stage on the Rettenbach Glacier. And also for ambitious hobby athletes, the Ötztal Cycling Marathon is a legendary annual event.

Of course, the popular endurance sport can also be approached much more leisurely here – thanks to the e-bikes, which can also be hired, and with some support. With us every cyclist gets his money’s worth. Numerous signposted circuits – from a slight difference in altitude to hundreds of metres of altitude – invite you to explore. More than 40 marked mountain bike trails lead over 900 km through varied terrain. Due to the challenging single trails that have been opened in recent years, the Ötztal Valley has also become a hotspot for enduro bikers.

E-Bike Tour Radweg Ötztal

From a leisurely cycling day with the family to a sporty trekking trail, the Niederthai area alone offers a wonderful selection of attractive cycling tours.

Klettern Längenfeld

The approximately 250 three-thousand-metre peaks as well as the low mountain ranges of the Ötztal valley offer an almost limitless selection of mountain and alpine tours, from a leisurely high-altitude trail to an adventurous glacier trail.

Climbing-Eldorado

… without limit and a place of longing for mountaineers

Climbing enthusiasts as well as beginners and families will find an Eldorado in the Ötztal to prove themselves in the vertical. The numbers alone speak for themselves: 20 varied climbing gardens, 8 secured via ferrata, 3 high ropes courses and around 750 routes! The Ötztal valley is considered the best granite climbing area in Tyrol. Such a large number of climbing possibilities of all levels of difficulty in such a confined space are a rarity and a true paradise even for the ambitious. With more than 40 ice climbing routes, the Ötztal valley is a real magnet for climbing enthusiasts and mountain enthusiasts from all over the world, even in winter.

Sport climbing is often crowned by a fabulous view of the surrounding peaks, which of course make the mountaineer’s heart beat faster. After all, the Wildspitze (3,772 m) is the second highest mountain in Austria.

Via ferrata Stuibenfall

An unforgettable experience

The via ferrata Stuibenfall is much easier to master and yet a highlight for all climbing sportsmen and women. It is only 5 minutes away from our Gasthof Stuibenfall. It takes about three hours to climb the 300 metres in altitude and 450 metres in length from Umhausen up to us.

Thanks to the step aids, the via ferrata is also ideal for families with children from 10 years and beginners. Accompanied by an overwhelming natural spectacle, the climb leads along the falling water masses, which can be crossed by daredevils on a wire rope shortly before leaving. The successful ascent of the via ferrata Stuibenfall is best celebrated with a hearty snack in the inn of the same name.

Klettern Stuibenfall

In the surrounding area there are 3 climbing gardens, one of them in Niederthai am Tauferberg with granite blocks for real experts.

Awe-inspiring glaciers, colorful larch forests and idyllic mountain lakes – these are just a few of the many impressions that we all associate with the Ötztal: at the same time it is a land-scape worth protecting that attracts myriad visitors from around the globe.

As Austria’s third largest nature preserve, the ÖTZTAL NATURE PARK covers an area of about 510 square kilometers – there is no other protected area which has a larger glacier-covered surface (about 17,5%) in all of Austria. Among the characteristics are large glacier fields, natu-ral history studies and research on high Alpine archeology. Additionally, the ÖTZTAL NATURE PARK has a lot to offer to all guests: visitors can choose from up to 18 theme hikes per week, over 15 events and lectures on current nature topics and a fun-packed child activity program.
